Start Early
Job and fellowship applications take longer than expected. Build materials before a deadline is active:
- CV
- Short research statement
- Teaching or mentoring statement when relevant
- Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging statement when requested
- One-page project summary
- Website or portfolio
- Reference list
Academic Applications
Academic applications often require a coherent research vision. A strong research statement should explain:
- What problem area you own
- Why it matters now
- What methods make your work distinctive
- What you will do in the next three to five years
- Why the target department or program fits
Nonacademic Applications
For agency, utility, nonprofit, national lab, and industry roles, translate research into capabilities:
- Data analysis
- Modeling
- Forecasting
- Geospatial workflows
- Scientific programming
- Uncertainty analysis
- Stakeholder communication
- Decision support
Fellowships
Keep a running list of fellowship deadlines. Start drafts early enough to get feedback on framing, not just proofreading.
References
Ask for letters early. Provide the recommender with the call, deadline, CV, draft materials, and a short note explaining what you hope the letter emphasizes.
