New publications: HydroSMADE dataset and coupled water–carbon modeling
November 3, 2026
Two new papers co-authored by Dr. Abeshu are now out, one in Scientific Data and one in the Journal of Hydrology.
Hydropower Site-level Monthly Availability Data Ensemble for 1950–2100 at Existing and Potential Global Sites (Scientific Data, 2026). This paper introduces HydroSMADE v1.0, an open dataset of monthly hydropower availability for 1,593 existing and 124,333 potential sites worldwide from 1950 to 2100. The data come from the global hydrologic model Xanthos, which represents hydropower operations explicitly. It treats storage and diversion sites differently and applies optimized operating rules. The dataset covers 30 alternative future scenarios.
Coupling water balance and vegetation carbon dynamics in a parsimonious global hydrologic model (Journal of Hydrology, 681, 136520, 2026). This study builds vegetation carbon dynamics into a parsimonious global hydrologic model. The aim is to simulate water balance and vegetation productivity together.
